Notes from the Artists...

Peter Penhallow

I am a product of all my influences, which are of course:

Elvis; The Beatles (duh); all of 50s and 60s and 70s radio; Prog Rockers; and the Sons of Champlin, with their Northern California vibe.

After that it would be Alice Cooper, Yes, ELP, Jethro Tull and the Dixie Dregs, to name a few.

I'd mention bands like Mahavishnu or Weather Report, but I don't have the chops to back that up.

Coming from a Prog background, with my years with the worlds-most-unsung-prog-rock band, Timmy, I can't help but hear some:

Genesis influence - Can't Get Enough;

Something reminiscent of Phil Collins solo work - All in Your Mind; There's also something about this piece. I mean, Bernie knows me so well, not only to not step on, but faithfully preserve my work, but also, especially in this case, to come up with the precise words and concept so that they are married to the music perfectly. A match made in heaven, really. Our finest collaboration in my opinion, and a worthy choice for the title of the entire project. Thank you, Bernie, for the heart-inspired completion of this masterpiece.

There's a bit of Bay Area rock pioneers Starship in there - We Owe That Much To Ourselves;

and I hear an homage (and it's only right) to my across-the-parking-lot neighbors and old pals, the News - Without You.

While in retirement, I can't express the thrill and joy and privilege of trading overdubs across the country with old pal Bernie, who makes my stuff shine like diamonds, and even lets me tinker a little on his wonderful music.

Life ain't so bad!

Bernie Chiaravalle

I've always admired Peter's talents from way back in my days in Marin County, CA. I was in a band called Logos and Peter was in Timmy. Logos was a rock band influenced by The Beatles, CSN, The Byrds, Buffalo Springfield and Todd Rundgren and the like. While Timmy were this totally different style ... I guess you could say "prog-rock". They played in time signatures new to me and chord progressions more complicated than I was used to. But they influenced me greatly. So it's wonderful to re-connect with Peter and collaborate on these songs!

For this EP Peter sent me tracks for All In Your Mind, We Owe That Much To Ourselves, Mon Cher & Without You. For these songs Peter recorded keyboards, synth bass, programmed drums and some guitars. I reimagined the lyrics and wrote new words and melodies for them. I also played and recorded new drum tracks, bass and guitars as well as additional keyboard textures.

I then sent Peter my works in progress, Give Me Something, A Wanting In Me & Agree To Disagree. He added some great parts that completed the compositions.
